If you know me, you have probably been the victim of me fangirling about Selena Kyle, Catwoman. Catwoman comics are my go to for anything, I absolutely adore them. When asked why I like Catwoman, I'll give the superficial answers: she plays by her own rules, she's a strong woman: THE femme fatale, she's beautiful in any imagining of her. If I had the opportunity to become Selena Kyle, I would think seriously hard about it. Didn't expect that part did you?
Here's a little bit about me:
Several years ago, I would have jumped at the opportunity to become anyone, especially a drop dead gorgeous super thief, even if my facebook relationship status would have to change to "It's Complicated." This was before I started to see myself through the fog.
In high school during my junior year, maybe only half the school year into it something happened. I, who had a group of friends I could talk books or boys with, basketball player, softball player, flutist, youth and government participant, thespian, bibliophile changed somehow. I lost that spark, the thing that made me care about doing things at all, let alone well... it just fizzled out. I trudged through the days, at first trying to pretend like everything was okay, assuring teachers and the counselor that I was fine, but then I just stopped pretending. I forgot what it was like to be happy and because of this the group of friends I thought would be there for me just started leaving me out of conversations until I became almost entirely invisible unless someone was making fun of me. It's high school, the bullies like easy targets.
This continued until I was attempting to get through college while not on academic probation due to the days I was unable to climb out of bed, let alone get the required homework done. Finally one night I swallowed a handful of pills that I had smuggled into my room and climbed into bed to wait for death. I don't remember anything until about 5pm the next day, I don't remember if I had managed to go to the bathroom and throw up the pills or if I had simply not taken enough but I woke up still unhappy but somehow relieved to see the sunshine. I started researching. Wishing for death, the scars I covered up on my arms with oversized hoodies, they weren't me... this wasn't who I wanted to be and I finally realized that something had to be wrong. The next day I went to the doctors and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I started taking a medication that I still take today and slowly began to rebuild my life.
First was trying to remember what having fun was like again, it may sound strange but I couldn't remember what made me happy or how to enjoy a day. Through the months of self discovery I found comic books, my first hero actually wasn't Catwoman, it was X-23. I devoured the series and then DC launched their New 52. I saw the Catwoman comic on the shelf and there was a click in my mind, I grabbed it and read it that day at a coffee shop. Shortly after that I took the next step: My brother had been dating a girl, we'll call her Aislin, and he encouraged me to talk to her.
After a little bit of talking, I invited Aislin to what would be both of our first comic book convention. We laughed, and talked, and I left with a bag full of Catwoman comics. That was 2 years ago. At that point I realized I was hooked: Batgirl is great, Batwoman is pretty cool, there's a connection I feel with Catwoman.
Maybe it's that nobody really understands what goes on in her head, maybe it's the cat scratches she uses as a weapon. I had used blades as a weapon too only instead of using them on others, I used them on myself. I had been a cutter for awhile, I have not cut in about a year. I had used my cats as story to explain the scratches to get people who saw them when I pulled up my sleeves even before I discovered Catwoman, people always drop it after that.
Throughout the process of making new friends and learning that real friends won't stop talking to you because you're depressed or hyperactive, sometimes in the same day, discovering table-top games thanks to Aislin, and meeting a very special man who I share a strong connection to (also thanks to Aislin), Catwoman had been there through it all. She had been a distraction on the really bad days, a rush of excitement when new issues came out, and an ever growing connection as I continue to dive into the story surrounding Catwoman.
Tomorrow, Aislin and I will again go to that small comic book convention that was our first step into a really good friendship that has brought so much happiness into my life. I hope to find more Catwoman comics.
I'm a nerd, geek, comic book reader, book reading, table-top and video game playing girl who currently lives and grew up in Central Illinois.

Horimono - Marvel Heroic (June 19)
Not gonna write a letter this time, we left at a weird place so it will have to wait until this Wednesday when I get to play Horimono again. That Wednesday I was handed a tweaked Iron Man power set. The GM, knowing me so well, figured that a gold early version of Iron Man's costume was the shiniest thing in the room and the thing I would most likely go for. One of her distinctions is 'Ooo Shiny!' and I have been known to poke and/or take shiny things in this GMs games. The last of these games was a World of Darkness Hunter campaign.
So, having fulfilled my 10xp by deciding to "get back into the game" by stealing from S.H.I.E.L.D. I spent that xp to unlock the powerset, thereby making it work for my character. Now Marvel Heroic Roleplaying Game is a story based game, you can get away with just about anything as long as you have a good explanation about it and roll really well, so I've been contemplating as to how exactly Horimono would power the Iron Man suit... which needs to be renamed soon because it's hers now. I added a limit to both the mutant power set and the Iron Man armor where I have to turn off one power set to use the other. Makes sense and I think it makes things fair to the other players. So that would leave her black magic tattoo. She is a mystic expert and so it would make sense that she could tap into her powerset some how to power it, but it can't be too draining to merit me having to buy a multi attack. The other option is that she took it to White Dwarf, the former super villain who is a rival to Stark Enterprises, and had him tweak it so that it would work for her but then I'm still stuck with the question of how it works. How does Warmachine power his armor?
Well, I still have a few days to contemplate this issue plus come up with a whole new milestone list for my super thief.

Books, Books, Books
Went to a comic book convention today. Spent 2 hours going through books, and left with 75 books when I hit my budget limit for comics. I picked up some Dragonball Z (which I want to send to my brother), Ranma 1/2, X-Men, Star Wars, and a lot of Catwoman. I have been on the hunt for old Catwoman books, not only to collect, but I would like to use some to make comic book heels.
I then went to the game store and picked up the Marvel RPG game book so that I can finish building my super hero/super villain (she does what she wants). I have already decided to make her a Crime Master, this will help her know the ins and outs of the crime world. We should finally get to play this Wednesday, I am so excited.
I then wandered down to my favorite used book store where I decided I needed more cook books. I found The Absolute Beginner's Cookbook, and Classic Cooking with Coca-Cola. I can't wait to start cooking, maybe I'll blog about that as I do it. When I told my boyfriend about the cookbooks his question was "Comic book cookbooks?" That prompted me to go on a hunt on amazon and sure enough I found one and ordered that and multiple books from my wishlist. It truly was a day for books and it was glorious.
So I bought more books, but my bookshelves are not ready for now books. I'm still in the process of cleaning and organizing my room. So I decided it was time to tackle my bookshelves. I gathered up all of my books that were not shelved and shelved them (by author for the fiction books, the non-fiction still needs work). Then it was time to tackle the taller shelf. I pulled books out and stacked and went through them. I pulled a huge stack that weren't even mine but my dad's, so that promptly left my room. By the end of it I had narrowed 3 shelves of books down to two, leaving me with a new shelf for my gaming stuff. I used the top shelf for my rpg books and cookbooks, and the second shelf for my board games, the bottom two shelves were my non-fiction books. I don't plan on leaving the book shelf there when I start moving furniture, but it works for now.

Deadpool
Comic books and gaming have found their place in my life, that I cannot lie about... but it has been the cause of inside jokes between myself and my friends (my little sister included). I was at the Gopher one night and my sister called me, she was at home and I thought "perfect opportunity." I had been wanting to do Deadpool inspired nails for awhile so I asked her if I had Deadpool red in with my fingernail polish.
She was clueless. I told her to Google it, just Google it. She heard Google Google and she relayed that to me. When I finally got my point across she informed me that I had a similar shade. Yet when Deadpool comes up now between us she says "Google Google?" and I immediately lose it, laughing so hard. Yes, it's stupid but it is something we share and it's because of my love for comic books.

There are also jokes concerning the Marvel RPG game, my first game even got myself mentioned in a blog (how exciting!). I played Magma that game and my boyfriend (henceforth known as Superman) played Warlock. He changed into R2D2 and the Deathstar at different points of the game. It was a blast. My second time playing the game with a different ST, I played Susan Storm (Invisible Woman). Leave it to the ST to find a way for all of us to wake up naked. (Spiderman was upset that Susan went invisible before he could see anything.) I'm working on an original super hero for the next Marvel game, taking milestones from my first Marvel ST, a friend of mine. I took a milestone list inspired by Deadpool (go figure) and the other list works well with her side job being a super thief (can't be too good, now can we?). As for her powers, I'm unsure as of now. I had played with the idea of a plant manipulator but when Superman said "So, you're playing Poison Ivy?" I knew that wasn't going to work. I have until Wednesday to come up with something. Here's to hoping.

Marvel Bows
So I had to urge to get crafty so after work I went to JoAnn Fabric's to look at their fabric selection (couldn't find anything at my work place). I immediately zeroed in on Marvel comic book fabric and wanted to wear it. A few weeks prior I had come across anneorshine's youtube video where she shows how to make bows out of fabric.
Anneorshine's Video
She used vinyl in her video but mentioned that this could be used for other types of fabric. I just had to see if I could get comic book bows. I followed the instructions on the video and by the end of it I made 2 bows (with enough fabric to make 6 more. I wore the Iron Man bow yesterday and proudly showed off my latest creation. I can't wait to make more.
